She's also frontwoman of Rufus. Khan was raised Catholic. She attended the elementary school of Saint Thomas the Apostle Church located in Hyde Park. She attributed her love of music to her grandmother who introduced her to jazz as a child. Khan was a rhythm and blues fan when she was a teenager. In her twelfth year she was a member of the Crystalettes with her sister Taka. In the late 1960s Khan was a frequent attendee at civil rights rallies along with her father's second wife Connie a strong advocate of the cause. Khan became a member of the Black Panther Party after befriending an activist from the group and Chicago native Fred Hampton in 1967. While many have assumed that Chaka was her given name during her time with the Panthers. She clarified that her name was actually the Yoruba Baba had given her her first name Chaka Adunne Aduffe. She quit her place in the Panthers in 1969, and left high school, after having attended Calumet High School, and Kenwood High School. (Now Kenwood Academy). Her first gig was around Chicago with small groups with her partner Hassan Khan. Chaka and Hassan were married in the year 1971.
