Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speaking. Feminist Frequency is a site with video and blogs on the representation of women in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American blogger and media critic who has won awards in her field, is a feminist blogger. She is the founder and the director executive of Feminist Frequency, a not-for-profit educational website which explores the portrayals of women in popular media narratives. In her efforts to dispel the myths of women that have been portrayed in popular culture, she is also working to highlight issues related specifically to the harassment of women and other marginalized classes of the Internet world. With a master's in politics and sociology from York University Sarkeesian is also popular as a public presenter and has presented talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival and the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Attracted to issues related to gender identity and feminism from an early age she launched her own website Feminist Frequency in 2009 when she was still a student at the University. Someone who was ambitious set out to develop a web-series to study gender representation in games. Then, she found herself in the middle of a cyber-bullying campaign. The attack did not stop her, however it did strengthen the determination of feminists who criticize media.
